Why are DDR4 DRAM memory prices so high?

Update, 5th December: We are finding 32GB DDR4 (2 x 16GB) stock is very low or non-existent in the supply channel, with price hikes to match.  Our stock is running out fast, and prices will be jumping by about £40.  So if you are needing to buy before Christmas, please order now to avoid disappointment and price rises.

Original Blog, 1st November:

Those interested in buying a PC with 16GB or 32GB of memory will have noticed prices substantially higher than only a few months ago, and double what they were a year ago.  Unfortunately the worldwide demand for DDR4 memory is outstripping supply. And it doesn't look like 2018 will be any better as forecasts show demand continuing to outstrip supply capacity until 2019. So if you are waiting for price falls, it is likely to be a long wait.

Here is an example of a price trend for 16GB DDR4 from the partpicker.com website. In the UK 16GB DDR4 is now about £140-£160 + VAT.
