When considering the speed of an SSD you need to consider both the sequential performance as well as the IOPS performance (Input/Output Operations per Second). The sequential performance is the maximum speed when transferring large files. The IOPS performance is a better measure of the performance of Operating System tasks where many smaller files are read and written during normal use of a PC.

We now have options for the latest NVMe SSDs that use the M.2 PCI Express x4 interface, which enables the limitations of the traditional SATA interface to be surpassed with speeds in excess of 3000MB/s and IOPS of over 300K. The performance of the various SSD options available are:
