Worldwide Hard Drive Shortage & Price Hikes, because of Thailand Flooding

Posted on 27th Oct 2011 @ 9:20 PM

Unfortunately the terrible floods in Thailand have caused the shut down of major Hard Drive manufactures such as Western Digital (who have lost about 50% of their world production).  As key component makers are also flooded there are supply chain problems for all the manufacturers, even those who do not have flooded main factories.

Because of this, within a few days hard drives have suddenly become extremely hard to obtain, and where there is stock, extremely expensive.

For example, today a major UK distributor has just started to re-list the availability of some models of Seagate hard drives, at over 3x the price they were a week ago.

It is unclear how long this level of shortage will continue for.  It is certainly clear that it will be many months before production will reach previous levels.

Unfortunately our prices have had to rise significantly because of these events.
