This great value external dual-disk RAID drive is great for those needing performance and data safety. Using the disk in its RAID 1 Mirror configuration will give you 3TB of capacity, with your data automatically being written to both disks at the same time. If a disk failed, then your data would be safely held, and can still be accessed, on the other disk drive.
Other dual disk configurations are also possible by changing the slider on the front of the enclosure (and pressing the reset button). See the detailed panel (below right). Please note that your data is lost when you switch between different RAID modes, so it must be set before you start adding data.
If you are using JBOD mode, where both disks are accessed seperately, then you must have an eSATA port that supports "port multiplier mode". Otherwise only one of the disks will be seen.
The WD Caviar Green disk drives use the very latest technology with a massive 750GB per platter (so only 4 platters are needed for 3TB of capacity), enabling the massive capacity without increasing heat compared to previous generation disks.
This product is aimed at PC users with fast eSATA ports, or standard USB 2.0 ports. You will get significantly faster performance using eSATA. A backplate is included that enables you to make an eSATA port on the back of a desktop PC, using one of the internal SATA ports on your motherboard.
See our performance graphs below to compare the speed of the unit in different configurations.
You can eject and change disk drives easily using the disk doors on the front of the unit. No screws are needed.
Windows XP cannot work with sizes of greater than 2TB, so cannot use this disk in any mode. Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Apple Macs do not have this limitation.

2 Identical Disk Drives are included. 6TB (6000GB) Total Capacity Western Digital Caviar Green, 3TB SATA-III, 5400rpm with 64MB Cache. Reduced power consumption – WD has reduced power consumption making it possible for our energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. Cool and quiet – Drives with WD GreenPower technology yield lower operating temperatures for increased reliability and low acoustics for ultra-quiet PCs and external drives. IntelliPower – A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. Additionally, WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads on systems as they are booted. IntelliSeek – Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration. NoTouch ramp load technology – The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit. Advanced Format (AF) – Technology being adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers as one of multiple ways to continue growing Hard Disk Drive capacities. AF is a more efficient media format that enables increased areal densities.
